QUESTION 4.4.5

GMDSS station operation and testing

Oil, Chemical, LPG, LNGBridge

What is being checked

The inspector is checking whether the GMDSS station maintains required sea-area coverage, reserve power, watches, tests and records for routine and emergency communication, with officers able to configure, cross-check, test and respond to failure of the actual equipment fitted.

Practice questions

Answer aloud, then open the preparation point.

1What safety function does gmdss station operation and testing provide?

The gmdss station maintains required sea-area coverage, reserve power, watches, tests and records for routine and emergency communication.

2How is the complete function tested?

Complete daily, weekly and monthly tests using built-in or approved test facilities, verify reserve power and antennas and record results without false alerts.

3What is its principal limitation?

A successful self-test may not prove antenna radiation, shore connectivity, position input or reserve-power endurance.

4What is your response if it fails?

Use duplicated or alternate communication equipment, restore mandatory watchkeeping, notify the Master and shore and obtain repair under the approved maintenance method.

5Show the latest test and operational evidence.

Link the dated record to the actual unit, test method, result, defect response and restoration; a panel lamp test alone is not sufficient where the full signal path can be tested.

Where an observation may arise

PROCEDURE UNKNOWN

The responsible officer cannot explain safe use, limitations or failure response.

TEST INCOMPLETE

Testing does not prove the required operational function or remote indication.

TEST GAP

Required daily, weekly or monthly test evidence is absent.

RESERVE POWER

Capacity or charger condition does not support the approved endurance.

SEA-AREA GAP

Required coverage or duplication is unavailable without control.

Master's practical note

Choose the most demanding approved sea area and trace a complete distress path on reserve power. Healthy equipment on main supply is only part of GMDSS readiness.

Equipment boundary and references

Equipment boundary: Exact carriage, duplication and maintenance requirements depend on approved GMDSS sea areas and SOLAS amendments. Live distress testing is prohibited except through authorised procedures.
