What is being checked
The inspector is checking whether the vessel displays the correct lights and day shapes for its condition, with failures detected and alternate arrangements ready, with officers able to configure, cross-check, test and respond to failure of the actual equipment fitted.

1What safety function does navigation lights and shapes provide?

Test each lamp and failure alarm from the control panel, verify actual illumination and arcs where practicable, and inspect duplicate lamps, power supplies, screens and day shapes.

Master's practical note
Compare the panel selection with the actual lights outside. Wiring or labelling errors can survive repeated panel tests because the wrong lamp still produces a healthy indication.

Equipment boundary: The applicable configuration comes from COLREG and the vessel's real status. Additional local lights must not impair or be mistaken for statutory lights.
