Master's practical note
Inspect the physical release path. An in-date beacon can still fail to float free because of paint, a retaining strap, overhead obstruction or a wrongly secured lanyard.

Equipment boundary: Self-test and transmission-test restrictions are manufacturer and administration specific. Never activate a live distress alert merely for inspection.
