What is being checked
The inspector is checking whether the recorder continuously captures required inputs and officers can preserve casualty data before any storage medium overwrites it, with officers able to configure, cross-check, test and respond to failure of the actual equipment fitted.

Use approved performance checks and playback to verify recorded content, review the valid annual performance-test certificate and test preservation controls without erasing data.

The responsible officer cannot explain safe use, limitations or failure response.
Testing does not prove the required operational function or remote indication.
Officers cannot preserve data before automatic overwrite.
Audio, image or sensor input is absent despite a healthy general status.
The annual test or certificate does not reflect modification or repair.
Master's practical note
Ask the OOW to describe the first five minutes after an incident. Delay in preservation can destroy the best evidence even while the VDR continues recording normally.
Equipment boundary and references
Equipment boundary: Retention depends on VDR generation: revised-standard VDRs include at least 720 hours long-term and 48 hours fixed and float-free recording. S-VDR arrangements may differ; use the fitted standard and maker instructions.
