QUESTION 10.3.7

Gas welding and cutting equipment

Oil, Chemical, LPG, LNGEngine Room, Exterior Decks

What is being checked

The inspector is checking whether oxygen and fuel-gas equipment is compatible, leak-free, protected against flashback and stored so a cylinder fire or leak does not escalate into the accommodation or machinery space.

Practice questions

Answer aloud, then open the preparation point.

1Why must oil never contact oxygen fittings?

High-pressure oxygen can react violently with hydrocarbons and cause ignition or explosion.

2Where are flashback arrestors fitted?

Identify the actual approved arrangement at regulators, torch or both and follow the maker standard.

3How is leakage tested?

Use approved leak-detection fluid or method. Never use a flame.

4How are spare cylinders stored?

Secure, cap, ventilate and segregate oxygen from fuel gas outside accommodation and machinery spaces.

5What happens after hot work stops?

Close cylinder valves, depressurise safely, remove equipment as required and maintain the specified fire watch and recheck.

Where an observation may arise

MIXED STORAGE

Oxygen and fuel-gas cylinders lack required segregation.

DAMAGED HOSE

Hoses are cracked, taped, incorrectly joined or contaminated.

NO FLASHBACK CONTROL

Required non-return valves or arrestors are absent, wrong or overdue for replacement.

LEAKAGE

Valves, regulators or connections leak.

CYLINDER CONTROL

Cylinders are unsecured, uncapped, unlabelled or out of test.

Master's practical note

Inspect the complete gas path from cylinder valve to torch. A tidy trolley can conceal expired cylinders, oil-contaminated oxygen fittings or a flashback device fitted in the wrong location.

Equipment boundary and references

Equipment boundary: Component life and arrestor location follow the maker, flag, class and company standard. Gas equipment condition does not itself authorise hot work.
