Berth-to-berth passage planning

Applicability: All vessel types; apply the equipment and operational conditions stated in this entry.

What is being checked

Check the vessel’s actual procedures, equipment and records against these points from RISQ 3.2.

Practice questions

Preparation prompts derived from this entry, not an official inspector interview script.

1Is an automated route check sufficient for approval?

No. The source includes visual checks, manual/automatic validation, bridge-team cross-checks, final Master authorisation and revalidation along the route.

2What changes when an old passage plan is reused?

Recheck that the route remains safe, current charts and conditions apply, and settings, vessel particulars, ETA and relevant warnings are correct.

3How should look-ahead dimensions be planned?

For each leg, considering speed, manoeuvring and navigation conditions; reassess margins in reduced-position-accuracy CATZOC areas.

Where a finding may arise

An incomplete plan, missing validation/briefing/approval, unsafe settings or undocumented amendments may prevent a satisfactory answer. Do not treat stored routes or automated checks alone as an approved passage plan.

Past observations for practice

Anonymised reports, manually reviewed before publication. These are reported experiences, not additional inspection requirements.

No reviewed observations have been added for this entry.

Share an observation for private review

Remove vessel, company and inspector names, report numbers, exact dates and confidential information. Do not paste a complete inspection report.

Source clarification

The shallow-contour, safety-depth and safety-contour conditions are kept distinct as in the source. No generic clearance formula or numerical safety margin is added.
