QUESTION 10.6.1

LNG fuel-tank water-spray protection

Oil, Chemical, LPGMain Deck

What is being checked

The inspector is checking whether the fixed water-spray system protects exposed LNG fuel tanks and adjacent boundaries, and whether crew can start, isolate and verify it during a gas-fuel fire scenario.

Practice questions

Answer aloud, then open the preparation point.

1What does this spray system protect?

Identify the exposed fuel-tank surfaces and adjacent superstructure, compressor, pump or control-station boundaries shown on the approved plan.

2Where is it started?

Identify the approved remote location and explain pump, valve and section selection.

3How is nozzle coverage verified?

Use periodic flow or approved sectional testing and inspect spray pattern, blockage, pressure and drainage.

4Does water spray extinguish an LNG jet fire?

Its primary role is cooling and exposure protection. Gas supply isolation and the shipboard emergency plan govern fire response.

5What happens in freezing weather?

Apply the approved draining, heating or other frost-protection arrangement and verify readiness before exposure.

Where an observation may arise

BLOCKED NOZZLE

Corrosion, paint or debris prevents the approved spray pattern.

REMOTE FAILURE

The system cannot be started from the designated safe position.

VALVE ERROR

A section is isolated or incorrectly lined up.

NO FLOW TEST

Records do not demonstrate distribution and pressure.

FROST DAMAGE

Residual water or failed heating compromises the system.

Master's practical note

Trace one spray section from remote start to the last nozzle. Pump operation alone does not demonstrate that water reaches every protected boundary.

Equipment boundary and references

Equipment boundary: This applies only to vessels within the official vessel-type scope that are fitted to use LNG or another relevant low-flashpoint fuel. Follow the approved IGF design and fire-control plan.
